Project

Cachoeiras do Cantá

Native forest conservation (REDD+) on rural properties in the municipality of Cantá, Roraima, in the Brazilian Amazon.

Status

In preparation, no credits issued

The project has not yet been listed, validated or registered under Verra's VCS Program, and no carbon credits have been issued for it. This page does not offer credits or contain any estimate of credits.

What the project proposes

To keep the native forest of the project area, which is part of the properties, standing, through fire and deforestation prevention and long-term monitoring. The measures will be set out in the project description and, once in place, checked by an independent body.

What this page does not yet show

The methodology and any figures for area, carbon stock or credits. The methodology will be stated in the project description submitted to the programme; the figures depend on work under way, including the field inventory, and on the programme's assessment, and will be published once they appear in the project's public documents.

Stages

Where the project stands

What has been done, what is under way and what comes next. The page is corrected, with the date, whenever something changes.

  • Done

    • Choice of certification programme: Verra's VCS Program.
    • Opening of the proponent's account on the Verra Registry.
    • Desk analysis of land cover and deforestation from public datasets (MapBiomas, and PRODES from INPE).
  • Under way

    • Project description, the document the programme requires: draft in preparation, on the programme's template.
    • Forest carbon inventory, with permanent marked plots, by a forest engineering firm: being contracted.
    • Stakeholder consultation: in preparation, by Venturi's own team.
    • Collection and updating of the properties' records, registrations and maps.
  • Planned

    • Opening of the project's complaints channel, before the first consultation meeting or field visit.
    • Consultation meetings with neighbouring communities, their associations and public bodies.
    • Field measurement for the inventory.
    • Listing on the programme registry.
    • Validation by an accredited independent body, including a site visit.
    • Periodic verifications, also by an independent body.

The municipality of Cantá

According to MapBiomas annual mapping, the municipality of Cantá had 649,408 hectares of forest formation in 1985 and 538,197 hectares in 2025: 111,211 hectares less, or 17.1%. Over the same period, pasture grew from 607 to 98,697 hectares.

Assessment

How the project will be assessed

Under the rules of Verra's VCS Program, in this order.

  1. Listing

The project is entered on Verra's public registry, initially as under development or directly as under validation, and its documents are then published there, except for commercially sensitive information.

  2. Public comment

Once the project is listed as under validation, anyone may comment for 30 days through the project's page on the Verra Registry, giving their name, organisation, country and email address. Verra publishes a summary of the comments, and the proponent must take each one into account. Comments sent outside that period must also be addressed.

  3. Validation

An independent body, accredited by an accreditation body and approved by Verra, assesses the project and visits the site. Validation cannot be finalised before the public comment period ends.

  4. Registration and verification

Once validated and registered, the project undergoes periodic verifications, also by an independent body. Credits can only be issued after verification.

Commitments

How the project is conducted

These apply to everything Venturi does, contracts or communicates in this project.

  • Say what is done and what is not.

This page separates what is done, under way and planned, and is corrected, with the date, whenever something changes.

  • Consult before changing access.

No project activity that restricts neighbours' or communities' access to land or resources starts before those affected have been consulted. Rights to land and resources, including those of Indigenous Peoples, local communities and customary rights holders, may be affected only with the free, prior and informed consent of the right-holders and under a transparent agreement that provides for just and fair compensation, as the programme requires (VCS Standard v4.7, section 3.18.8).

  • No promises before listening.

No benefit is promised before the consultation is concluded; whatever is agreed will be set out in the project description.

  • Estimate without overstating.

The calculations in the project description will follow the programme's principle of conservativeness: assumptions that do not overestimate emission reductions (VCS Standard v4.7, section 2.2). Until the field inventory, the carbon stock is an assumption, and the project description states it as such. Where the rules allow more than one reading, the project description states which was adopted and why.

  • Report only verified results.

Emission reductions will be presented as project results only after verification by an independent body approved by Verra.

  • Decent work.

The forest inventory contract prohibits forced labour, child labour and the exploitation of victims of human trafficking, including among workers of subcontracted third parties, and the same prohibition applies to every field contract of the project, as the programme requires (VCS Standard v4.7, section 3.19.15).

Participation

Consultation and complaints

Stakeholder consultation, with neighbouring communities, their associations, organisations and public bodies, is in preparation and is carried out by Venturi's own team, through meetings and visits.

The programme requires the consultation to be carried out before project activities are implemented, in a way that is inclusive, culturally appropriate and respectful of local knowledge, with a representative of each stakeholder group. It covers what the project proposes and how it will be implemented, with each group's agreement to take part; the risks, costs and benefits it may bring; the laws that protect workers; the effects on property rights, as part of free, prior and informed consent; benefit sharing, where relevant; and how validation, verification and the independent body's site visit work (VCS Standard v4.7, section 3.18.2). Where a community has its own consultation protocol, consultation with that community follows it.

A dedicated channel for complaints, questions and suggestions will open before the first consultation meeting or field visit, and its contact details will be published on this page. Until then, messages about the project can be sent to contato@venturictj.com.

Documents

Documents and proponent

  • The project description and the other documents the programme requires will be listed here, with the address of the project's page on the Verra Registry, once they are submitted.
  • If a public project document is missing from the registry, anyone may request it from the registry itself (VCS Standard v4.7, section 3.18.16).
